It is the informetion obtained from above-mentioned that has formed the basis of the work of the
Preparatory Committee. Up to the resent replies have been received from thirty-two Governments giving the information requested. The Governments have also be asked to give figures showing the amount of drugs ramufeo turėd within their territories, the amounts imported, exported and re-exported and, if possible, the amounts actually consured.
Several countrics
have given very full replies, but some of the manufacturing countries have given no information as to the amount of the
druge manufactured.

The Sub-Committee referred to above reported its opinion that 600 milligramxes per ospita per annum might be oogidered a provisional maximum amount of raw opium, containing an average of 10% of morphine, required for medical and scientific
purposes.
The Health Committee of the Longue, at its reeting in February 1984, considered this report and took the view that the estimate might be reduced to 450 milligrammes for countries possessing a well-developed medical service,

On verious capita, per annum, sent in by the various States. occasions the Committee has instructed the Secrcturiat to obtain supplementcry information on various questions raised in connection with these documente. Thus it was decided to enquire whether it would be possible for the Health Committee to divide its estinate so as to show separately the figures for the world's requirements of morphine and heroin.
